About the Book This anthology in translation captures a cross section of the works of Tamil women poets through the ages-from the Sangam period to the present. This is the first such collection, with a sweep so extensive and a coverage so comprehensive. The sublime poetry of Sangam; the simple and lofty ethical verses and aphorisms of Auvaiyar; the devotional intensity of Kaaraikkaal Ammaiyaar and Aandaal; the kaleidoscopic variety of ‘stray verses’; the raw earthiness of folk songs; and the vibrant and poignant outpourings of today’s self-empowering women-all these strands are woven into this fine tapestry.
The translation is marked by fidelity to the source text, sensitivity to the target language, and a style lyrical and lucid.
